Episode #100! with Shannon Hale,Mitali Perkins,Linda Sue Park,Jenni Holm,Kekla Magoon and Renee Watson

For this 100th episode of Kids Ask Authors. We are turning the tables. Instead of kids asking authors a question, authors are asking kids a question! We have six author questions answered by six real kids from our kids reviewer book clubs. Enjoy!

Grace Lin:
Okay. And now we have a question for Carter.

Mitali Perkins:
Hi, this is Mitali Perkins, author of Home Is In Between. I want to know what's your favorite snack while you're reading?

Carter:
I don't know because I'm not allowed to eat when I'm reading. Sometimes I do it, but if it's a new book, I'm not allowed to do it. Like get it dirty with cheese dust or something. But if I do, do it, I like to eat Cheetos, but obviously that's cheese dust. So, I'm not allowed to do that very much.

Grace Lin:
But if you are allowed to you, you like to eat the Cheetos. Is that what it is?

Carter:
Yeah. I like to be... I'll eat anything, reading a book, but sometimes I like to like eat differently depending on like the theme of the book.

Grace Lin:
Oh, like how?

Carter:
I don't know. If it's about something, then I can eat the certain food with me. Like relate with it.

Grace Lin:
I like to do that too. When the characters are eating certain foods, I like to try to eat the same food. If they're eating an apple, I'll go and eat an apple. Or if they're eating cake, I like to go eat cake at the same time. It kind of makes a book feel more real. Doesn't it?

Carter:
Yeah, but most of the time we don't have a cake available.

Grace Lin:
No, me neither. But sometimes I'll save the cake and then when I have cake, I'll purposely read the book.

Carter:
Oh.

Grace Lin:
But I guess maybe that's one of the small advantages of being an adult. You can eat while you read and nobody... You can't get in trouble.

Carter:
You can buy a library. If you get a book and you get food stains all over it.

Grace Lin:
That's true. Then you wouldn’t get in trouble. So you're right. We probably shouldn't eat while we read, but I still do it anyway. All right. Thank you, Carter.

Grace Lin:
Okay, and now we have a question for Elaine.

Renee Watson:
Hi, I'm Renee Watson, the author of Ways to Make Sunshine. I'd like to know how do you choose a book?

Elaine:
The way I choose a book is; the type of book and what it's about. I've read most books so I know what they're about and it's really fun to pick them out. I like chapter books the best because I can pause at any time without having to worry what page to go to. I have this book called Jasmine Toguchi and there's 13 chapters so I can take... so I can read some. If I want to go have a sip of water or a snack, I can just pause at a chapter and go have a snack or something. And I can remember the chapter in my brain.

Grace Lin:
Awesome. What a great answer. Thank you, Elaine.

Grace Lin:
And now we have a question for Kelly.

Kekla Magoon:
Hi, this is Kekla Magoon. I'm the author of The Season of Styx Malone. My question is where do you like to read?

Kelly:
I like to read, mostly, in our living room where there's two big bookshelves full of books. That way when I'm done with them, I don't have to walk very far so I can get another one. Because sometimes we have a certain amount of time... A certain window of time before we have to go outside or something. So I like to use as little time as I can to read as much as I can.

Grace Lin:
Oh, that's awesome. What a great answer. Thanks Kelly.

Grace Lin:
Alright and here I have Haylee and this is your question.

Jenni Holm:
This is Jenni Holm, the author of The Lion of Mars. My question is, would you rather have a cat or a dog read with you?

Haylee:
I would rather have a cat read with me because I have experience with this. My dog is more energetic and she always wants to play, but my cat is really laid back and he'll just lay down with me and fall asleep. I can just put him while I read and it's nice to have a little company and he gives me quiet time.

Grace Lin:
Aw, that's nice. Does it ever seem like the cat's trying to read with you or is just always sleeping?

Haylee:
Always sleeping.

Grace Lin:
Thank you. Here is an author question for Holland.

Shannon Hale:
Hi, this is Shannon Hale, the author of Best Friends. I want to know what was your favorite book when you were a baby?

Holland:
My favorite book when I was a baby was How Things Work. It was an open the flaps book and I made my mom read it to me so many times. Once she tried to accidentally lose it so she wouldn't have to keep reading it to me.

Grace Lin:
Did you find?

Holland:
Yeah and then she felt bad about it. So she didn't... So she found it.

Grace Lin:
Great.

Grace Lin:
And now we have a question for Hazel.

Linda Sue Park:
Hi, I'm Linda Sue Park. I'm the author of The One Thing You'd Save. I'd like to know, are you able to read in a car or do you get car sick? I loved to read when I was little, but I couldn't read in a car because I'd get really sick. And that made me sad.

Hazel:
Sometimes I get car sick, I don't know why. Sometimes I get car sick when I'm watching, but not that much when I'm reading.

Today’s kid BOOK REVIEW comes from Elise! She is reviewing, “The One Thing You’d Save” by written by Linda Sue Park and illustrated by Robert Sae-Heng.

My name is Elise. The book I would like to talk about is The One Thing You’d Save written by Linda Sue Park and illustrated by Robert Sae-Heng. What is the one thing you would save from a fire if your family and pets were already safe? This book is about the teacher asking her students to pick an object or a thing that is important to save if there was a real fire. I like this book because it was interesting to see what the students would save and some even changed their minds after the class discussion. One student said that he would focus on his own safety and not save anything. I agree and think that it is important to focus on saving yourself, then you can quickly try to get outside and avoid getting hurt. People should not save anything because most things are replaceable. This is a great book for everyone to read and think about what they would save in an emergency.

Thank you so much Elise!
